Meaning and Symptoms of Spondylitis

Spondylitis is an inflammatory disease that causes all or some of the vertebrae in the back to fuse together. It’s a kind of arthritis that affects more men than women with symptoms usually beginning in early adulthood. Unfortunately, as of yet, there is no cure for spondylitis. However, there are many treatments available that are very effective at relieving some of the symptoms of spondylitis.

What are the Most Common Spondylitis Symptoms?

As with any medical condition, no two people will ever suffer from the exact same symptoms when suffering from spondylitis. However, more often than not they will suffer from at least one of the following:

  • Pain in the hips when walking is often one of the first noticeable symptoms for many people
  • Stiffness or pain in the lower back, hips, or buttocks that persists for more than 3 months
  • Pain in the feet, particularly at the heel, making it uncomfortable to stand or walk
  • Restricted movement of the spine
  • Pain at the base of your pelvis, particularly when sitting
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Breathing difficulties can occur if the spine is affected at chest level. Movement of the joints between the ribs and breastbone becomes compromised, making it difficult to draw breath.

These are the most common symptoms that are associated with spondylitis. There may be others that appear later if left untreated, but as long as you catch it early enough there are plenty of treatment options available. You may find that your symptoms develop gradually over time or are worse after periods of inactivity. For many spondylitis sufferers, their pain is often worse in the morning or after night, and may even appear at regular intervals.

If you do suspect you have a problem consult your doctor immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment are always the best. Don’t suffer in silence. Get the help you deserve today.
